| The Sweetwater Branch watershed consists of approximately 2,000 acres in the south-central portion of Gainesville, Florida. Land use in the upper three-quarters of the watershed is heavily urbanized and includes commercial, industrial, and residential areas in addition to natural rural settings. The last master planning effort on the watershed well was completed more than a decade ago. As a result, the City of Gainesville Public Works Department desired to update the Master Plan for the watershed, focusing on water quality. Due to the age of the development within the watershed, most of the urban area discharges go untreated and flow into the creek system.
To remedy these issues, Jones Edmunds was selected to revitalize the tributaries in the Sweetwater Branch surface water drainage basin that includes Sweetwater Branch and Rosewood Creek (after confluence, the Sweetwater eventually drains into the Paynes Prairie Preserve). The primary goal of the project was to improve the surface water quality of the base flow and stormwater of the Sweetwater Branch watershed.
